You want to get your real estate license but you're not sure where to start? Below I outline the process. But keep in mind you'll want to talk with an Agent or maybe even an agency before making any choices to get recommendations etc.
- Go to Real Estate School. There is a 60 Hour course required prior to taking the Licensing Exam. The cost for this can rang anywhere from $300 - $500.
- Take the Licensing Exam. Once you pass the exam you are now licensed BUT you still can't act as an agent just yet. Why you say? The cost of the Exam is about $75.
- Now it's time for Post License. You post license course has to be taken within one year of getting your license. The cost of this will vary depending on where you go but will cost anywhere between $200 - $300.
- Well, you'll learn in school. But the bottom line is you must join a brokerage - obviously I've joined EXIT! The #1 agency in the Nation. My Due each year are about $300. This will be different depending on the Brokerage you choose. Some have fees that are monthly, some quarterly, some yearly. Another important factor to discuss or think about when you are choosing a broker is the split of your commission they get. When the brokerage gets a split typically your fee can be less. There are many decisions when choosing a brokerage.
- After you've chosen a brokerage. You may or may not have to join the local board. In Huntsville when you join the local board (Huntsville Area Association of Realtor or HAAR) you also join the state and national association as well. Those application fees and dues will vary depending on when you join but can range in price up to $1,000
- Now you are a part of a brokerage, you've joined the board and it's time to start operating your business. You'll need business cards, professional clothes, name badges, signs, website, a phone number and other advertising items at your discretion. The price of all of all of this will vary, depending on how much you do, whether you are part of a team or not and how much your brokerage helps with the start of your business. - Don't forget that every year there are dues to the boards you belong to, the MLS, and your brokerage not to mention the fees for Continuing Education Courses. So be ready. These costs are minimal when you are working so Get to work.
